Filozofia asta cu "Ohhh only 4.5/5.5GB available...I'm gonna cancel my pre-order" este un bullsh!t.Daca Sony chiar a ales aceasta cale, sigur au avut temeri bine bazate.

"UPDATE: A new source familiar with the matter has provided additional information to Digital Foundry that confirms only 4.5GB of the PS4's 8GB GDDR5 memory pool is guaranteed to game developers right now, while also clarifying how the PS4's "flexible memory" works in practice.

In real terms, an additional 512MB of physical RAM may be available in addition to the 4.5GB mentioned in the SDK. Flexible memory consists of physical and virtual spaces, and the latter introduces paging issues which impact performance. In our original story we combined them together.

For practical game applications, the correct figures for this story, as we understand it now, are a guaranteed 4.5GB for development and a further 512MB from the flexible pool. We have updated the headline accordingly."

The folks over at Digital Foundry cite "current PlayStation 4 documentation shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed development source" in detailing the RAM breakdown. The numbers aren't set in stone, though. Digital Foundry reports that developers can take back as much as 1GB of "flexible memory" from the OS when it's available. However, taking back this memory isn't as simple as flipping a switch; it's complicated enough that only first-party games may be able to do it at first, according to the report.
    ...

In Sony's case, at least, there's some hope that this allocation could change in the future, with "sources close to Sony" suggesting the OS could take up less RAM with future streamlining updates. On the Xbox One, on the other hand, Microsoft has reportedly carved out 3GB as a strict, inflexible OS allocation "in order to allow the background platform to evolve over a ten-year life-cycle." In other words, Microsoft is basically saying, "Sorry, Xbox One game developers. You can't use that RAM because we might need it for something later."

    Declaratie oficiala de la Sony:

PlayStation 4 gives up to 5GB of RAM to game developers • News • Eurogamer.net

We would like to clear up a misunderstanding regarding our "direct" and "flexible" memory systems. The article states that "flexible" memory is borrowed from the OS, and must be returned when requested - that's not actually the case.

The actual true distinction is that:
    • "Direct Memory" is memory allocated under the traditional video game model, so the game controls all aspects of its allocation
    • "Flexible Memory" is memory managed by the PS4 OS on the game's behalf, and allows games to use some very nice FreeBSD virtual memory functionality. However this memory is 100 per cent the game's memory, and is never used by the OS, and as it is the game's memory it should be easy for every developer to use it.
We have no comment to make on the amount of memory reserved by the system or what it is used for.

That RAM… | Retro City Rampage: The Video Game: The Development Blog!

    https://mobile.twitter.com/BriProv/s...40165026131968

Back in the Tub with 5.0/5.5/6/7/several Inches of RAM-Flavoured Water .

There are games in development that are using 6 GB of RAM. I will not say any more about this.

I will say: the RAM situation on launch, will not reflect the RAM situation in two years, and not reflect the RAM situation at the end of the console's life cycle.

Another hint I've been trying to drop is that there is potential for an upclock a few years into the console life cycle for both Xbox One and PS4. This can give a late generation graphics boost similar to the one on PSP. (Optimistic parrot hopes for a 2.4 TF 1 GHZ GPU)

PS3 avea 256MB RAM pt. OS (si inca 256MB RAM pt. video). De la 50MB RAM pentru OS au sarit la 3.5GB RAM? Come on Sony... Stop wasting RAM with crap!

Man si Androidul meu si iOS-ul meu ruleaza multe in background. Ce, are Photoshop in background?

    So people, relax.
